HSE Officer – Waste Management

About the role

The HSE Officer will support the implementation and daily monitoring of health, safety and environmental requirements across waste management operations. You will ensure that collection, transportation, storage and disposal activities are carried out safely and in full compliance with legal, client and company standards.

Key responsibilities

• Support and maintain the HSE Management System in line with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
• Monitor compliance with legal, contractual and company HSE requirements.
• Maintain procedures, risk registers, permits, inspection records and other audit‑ready documents.
• Conduct routine HSE inspections of vehicles, depots, workshops, transfer stations and waste handling areas.
• Verify safe segregation, handling, containment, storage, transport and disposal of waste, including hazardous waste.
• Identify and control critical risks such as vehicle movement, lifting equipment, traffic exposure, heat stress, confined spaces and work at height.
• Prepare and review risk assessments, job safety analyses, method statements and permit‑to‑work controls.
• Report, investigate and analyse incidents, near‑misses, spills and property damage, and track corrective actions to closure.
• Deliver HSE inductions, toolbox talks and task‑specific training for drivers, collectors and supervisors.
• Verify that employees and subcontractors hold required licences, permits and competencies.
• Promote safety awareness through campaigns, observations and coaching.
• Monitor environmental controls and support emergency preparedness.

Required profile

• Minimum 36 months of HSE experience in waste management or related field.
• Familiarity with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.
• Ability to conduct inspections, risk assessments and incident investigations.
• Experience delivering training and ensuring competency of field teams.
• Strong knowledge of environmental controls and emergency response procedures.
