Lead Data Governance Engineer

About the role

Canonical is seeking a Lead Data Governance Engineer to shape and enforce data governance policies across its global data mesh. Working remotely within the EMEA region, you will design, automate, and monitor data governance processes that ensure compliance with regulations such as GDPR, DPA, and ISO standards.

Key responsibilities

• Define, monitor, and execute data governance policies and standards.
• Design, implement, and maintain Python‑based tooling for automated data mesh operations, including data labeling and quality metrics.
• Deploy, operate, and support services built by the Data Governance team.
• Coach and mentor junior engineers, providing career development feedback.
• Promote best engineering and organizational practices across the team.

Required profile

• Exceptional academic record with an undergraduate degree in a technical discipline or a compelling alternative pathway.
• Proven track record of exceeding expectations and delivering high‑impact results.
• Experience with data quality, governance, and security processes and tools.
• Strong software development background in Python and SQL.
• Professional written and spoken English communication skills.
