Locum Pharmacy Assistant

About the role

The Locum Pharmacy Assistant supports a licensed Pharmacist in delivering safe and efficient medication services within a hospital setting. Working under supervision, the role ensures accurate prescription processing, medication preparation, and inventory management while upholding patient confidentiality and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Pharmacist in preparing, labeling, dispensing, and distributing medications according to prescriptions and departmental procedures.
• Review medication orders for completeness and flag clinical concerns, allergies, interactions, or dosing issues for pharmacist assessment.
• Provide patients with approved medication-use instructions and refer clinical queries to the Pharmacist.
• Maintain stock levels, conduct ordering, receiving, issuing, and perform stock rotation and expiry monitoring.
• Participate in inventory counts, investigate discrepancies, and manage excess, expired, or recalled products.
• Document and reconcile controlled, semi‑controlled, and narcotic medications in line with regulatory requirements.
• Perform routine checks of storage conditions, temperature, security, and labeling compliance.
• Process patient medication charges, credits, and cash/card transactions according to finance and pharmacy procedures.
• Keep pharmacy work areas clean, organized, and ready for operation.
• Report medication incidents, near misses, adverse drug reactions, and stock issues promptly.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; pharmacy technician certification preferred.
• Ability to work under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
• Good organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment.

Required skills

• Knowledge of medication dispensing and labeling procedures.
• Familiarity with inventory control and stock management.
• Understanding of controlled substance documentation and regulatory compliance.
• Basic numeracy for billing and transaction processing.
