Orthoptist – Ophthalmology Specialist

About the role

The Orthoptist will deliver independent and supervised eye‑movement assessments and non‑surgical treatments for patients with strabismus, amblyopia, and related ocular disorders. Working within a hospital setting, the professional ensures high‑quality patient care and maintains essential clinical supplies.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain adequate inventory of orthoptic materials and equipment, reporting shortages promptly.
• Conduct comprehensive oculomotor and orthoptic assessments, including examinations, diagnosis, and follow‑up for strabismus, amblyopia, and binocular vision abnormalities.
• Perform HESS/LEE charting and coordinate with maxillofacial physicians when required.
• Provide Fresnel prisms, corrective lenses, patches, drops, fusion exercises, and stereograms as part of non‑surgical treatment plans.
• Interpret clinical and diagnostic test results and develop individualized treatment strategies.
• Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatment options, and home‑care instructions.
• Monitor quality‑improvement indicators to ensure compliance with patient‑care standards.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years of post‑graduate orthoptic experience in a hospital environment.
• BSc degree or equivalent in Orthoptics (minimum 3 years).
• Additional 2‑year qualification leading to registration with the Health Professional Council (UK) or American Orthoptic Council.
• Current national professional license.
