Outdoor Development Trainer/Instructor

About the role

The Outdoor Development Trainer/Instructor will support The Model School’s outdoor department by delivering and designing outdoor activity and development programmes. This full‑time role combines hands‑on instruction, programme planning, equipment management and administrative support.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver allocated outdoor and development programmes under the supervision of the Outdoor Programmes Manager.
• Prepare course materials and use the Course Directors Handbook to ensure smooth programme execution.
• Assist in conducting generic and site‑specific risk assessments, including site visits.
• Manage stores and equipment: issue, receive, clean, inspect and help select new gear.
• Provide briefings and project updates to the Outdoor Programmes Manager, highlighting any concerns.
• Coordinate holiday scheduling in line with the employment contract.
• Maintain effective relationships with colleagues to support company objectives.
• Participate in staff training outside normal working hours when required.

Required profile

• Minimum three years of experience leading groups in outdoor settings, including development training and technical instruction.
• National governing body certifications such as Mountain Leader, Kayak Coach (inland & sea), Climbing Leader, Mountain Bike Leader, and First Aid.
• Ability to work under supervision and follow established safety and quality standards.

Required skills

• Proficiency in risk assessment and safety management for outdoor activities.
• Experience with equipment inventory, maintenance, and procurement.
• Strong organisational skills for programme planning and documentation.
