R&D Hybrid & Hydrogen Senior Engineer

About the role

Lead exploratory and applied research and development into next‑generation UAV/RPAS propulsion systems, including battery‑electric, hybrid‑electric and hydrogen powertrains. The role is hands‑on, covering technology scouting, concept design, modelling and prototyping in close collaboration with Powertech Italy, the Test team and external partners.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain a propulsion roadmap for electric, hybrid and hydrogen technologies aligned to UAV platform needs.
• Develop concepts, feasibility studies and trade‑studies for powertrain options, evaluating endurance, weight, power‑to‑weight, thermal management, cost and safety.
• Model and size powertrains and energy systems using first‑principles tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and Python, and perform mission, thermal and integration analyses.
• Design, build and test demonstrators and bench rigs, coordinating test campaigns with the Test team and Italy facility.
• Manage partnerships with technology partners, suppliers and universities, overseeing joint R&D activities and supplier relationships.
• Capture intellectual property, produce technical reports and hand‑off validated concepts to product managers.

Required profile

• Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Energy or Mechatronics Engineering (Master’s/PhD desirable).
• 5+ years of propulsion or powertrain R&D experience, with hands‑on work in electric, hybrid‑electric or hydrogen systems.
• Strong first‑principles engineering, modelling and prototyping abilities, and a proven track record of taking technology from concept to demonstrator.
