Staff Nurse – ICU

About the role

The Staff Nurse – ICU provides direct and indirect age‑specific care for patients in the Intensive Care Unit, ensuring safe, high‑quality clinical outcomes. The role involves comprehensive nursing assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation and coordination of care across the healthcare continuum.

Key responsibilities

• Perform continuous critical‑care assessment of patients and families, documenting all relevant data in the medical record.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop, revise and prioritize individualized care plans.
• Manage and operate specialized equipment such as bladder scanners, arterial blood gas analyzers, ECG monitors, and hemodynamic monitors.
• Provide hands‑on care for invasive devices including central venous catheters, implanted ports, chest tubes, and mechanical ventilators.
• Administer and document narcotic/controlled drugs, ensure compliance with Joint Commission International accreditation standards, and participate in unit‑based quality improvement activities.
• Educate patients and families, participate in staff meetings, and maintain mandatory education and competency requirements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (minimum three‑year program) or equivalent degree with registration as a Registered Nurse in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand or Australia.
• Valid license/registration to practice in the home country or last country of employment and current Basic Life Support certification.
• Minimum two years recent post‑graduate experience in an Intensive Care Unit or Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Required skills

• Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABG) and basic ECG.
• Operation of hemodynamic monitoring equipment (arterial pressure, central venous pressure).
• Management of central venous access devices, implanted ports and chest tube systems.
• Ventilator management including suctioning, intubation, weaning and non‑invasive positive pressure ventilation.
• Use of defibrillator for cardioversion, defibrillation and transcutaneous pacing.
