Vessel Master

About the role

The Vessel Master is responsible for the day‑to‑day operation of port tugs, ensuring safe and efficient vessel movements in accordance with the schedule and regulatory requirements. This role reports to the Port Captain/Superintendent and plays a critical part in maintaining HSE standards and vessel availability.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee daily inspection and maintenance of safety gear, deck machinery and firefighting equipment.
• Report operational issues, mechanical defects, engine or generator failures, and crew matters to the Port Captain/Superintendent.
• Maintain vessel cleanliness and condition to prescribed standards.
• Ensure the vessel is properly manned, crew are trained and competent, and emergency procedures are understood.
• Secure all cargo, equipment and materials on deck, especially during adverse weather.
• Plan and recommend training programs to improve performance and reduce operational delays.

Required profile

• Extensive experience operating port tugs or similar vessels.
• Thorough knowledge of international and local maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS, MLC).
• Ability to train and mentor crew on vessel‑specific equipment.
• Strong understanding of international radio telephony procedures and distress signals.

Required skills

• Operation of radar, echo sounder, GPS and GMDSS equipment.
• Use of navigation aids and fire‑fighting systems.
• Oil‑spill dispersant system handling.
• Compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS and MLC regulations.
• Proficiency in international radio telephony.
