Head of English Department

About the role

The school is seeking a dynamic leader to head its English department across all key stages, from early years to sixth form. Reporting to senior leadership, the Head of English will drive curriculum excellence, support staff development, and ensure outstanding pupil outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for English across primary and secondary phases, aligning with the school’s development plan.
• Design, develop and oversee a progressive English curriculum from EYFS to KS5, ensuring clear progression.
• Lead, mentor and manage departmental staff, including teachers and teaching assistants, through performance reviews and CPD.
• Monitor and improve teaching quality via lesson observations, learning walks and data‑driven interventions.
• Analyse assessment data to track progress, identify under‑achievement and implement targeted support for all learners, including SEND and EAL.
• Collaborate with other subject and phase leaders to ensure consistency and continuity across the school.
• Uphold safeguarding policies and model professional conduct for staff and pupils.

Required profile

• Relevant degree (Bachelors, PGDE/PGCE or Masters) in Education or English.
• Minimum of 4 years of teaching experience, with proven leadership or departmental management experience.
• Strong understanding of national English curriculum standards and assessment practices.
• Experience supporting diverse learners, including SEND and EAL students.
