Specialist Physician – Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

About the role

The Specialist Physician in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at SSMC delivers high‑quality, evidence‑based, patient‑centered care while supporting the Consultant Physician. The role involves direct patient management, supervision of junior staff, and participation in multidisciplinary teams.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose and treat ICU patients under the supervision of a Consultant Physician, adhering to best‑practice standards.
• Lead ward rounds, reassess in‑patients and out‑patients, and document clinical information promptly.
• Supervise junior medical staff and share responsibility for their patient care.
• Participate in on‑call coverage on a rotational basis, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
• Collaborate with other specialties and support services to ensure holistic patient care.
• Prepare patients for procedures, obtain informed consent, and communicate clinical information to patients and families.
• Support departmental initiatives, performance management, incident reporting and investigation.

Required profile

• Medical degree with specialist qualification in intensive care or related field.
• Experience in critical care environments and familiarity with ICU protocols.
• Ability to supervise and train junior medical staff.
• Strong commitment to clinical excellence and patient safety.
