Assistant Manager, Veterinary Services

About the role

Atlantis Dubai, part of Kerzner International, is looking for an experienced veterinary technician to provide laboratory services and veterinary care to its animal population of 31 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, 4 South African fur seals and about 65,000 marine and freshwater fish. The role covers Dolphin Bay, the Lost Chambers Aquarium, Atlantis The Royal Aquarium and satellite facilities, within a team of two veterinarians and three water quality technicians. It is a full-time position reporting directly to the veterinarians, with half the working time spent on clinical biology (diagnostic laboratory work).

Key responsibilities

• Process blood and other diagnostic samples from mammals and fish, including cytology, manual CBC, aerobic/anaerobic and fungal cultures, and ELISA using chemical analyzers and spectrophotometers.
• Operate, troubleshoot and maintain equipment such as hematologic and chemical analyzers, endoscopy, ultrasound, radiology, sterilization equipment and spectrophotometers.
• Formulate, prepare and dispense medication as ordered by veterinarians and administer treatment to hospitalized animals; assist with necropsy and post-mortem sampling.
• Maintain pharmaceutical and supplies inventories, and work with husbandry staff on animal behaviour training for medical procedures.
• Support veterinarians during research and special projects, and contribute to the Animal Health and Science team's goals.
• Provide emergency nursing skills, fish anesthetic management and monitoring, and support animal wellness programmes through preventive medicine and welfare promotion.

Required profile

• Certified laboratory or veterinary technician, or a master's degree in laboratory work (equivalent to 2 to 4 years of university study).
• Minimum three years of experience in diagnostic laboratory practice, domestic animal veterinary practice or research laboratory practice.
• Previous experience with wild animals is not compulsory.
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to stay positive in a fast-changing environment.
• Flexibility to work nights, weekends and holidays, with possible on-call duties.
