About the role

Structural Group, Inc. develops and integrates products, engineering support, repair and maintenance services and offers specialty contracting services. It is hiring an Estimator 1 in Abu Dhabi to define and quantify the scope of work and prepare conceptual, budgetary and construction cost estimates for projects, typically of low to moderate complexity up to $5 million.

Key responsibilities

• Define and quantify scope of work and prepare estimates, including quantity take-offs, material price lists, labour and equipment costs
• Draft formal letters and other written communication to customers and owners
• Ensure pricing of materials and subcontracts is completed timely and accurately, and stay involved in the change order process
• Organize take-offs, bid items, estimate set-up sheets, quotes and subcontractor comparisons
• Review design options and recommend the best solution based on cost, engineering quality or material availability
• Research historical data (purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity reports) and compile summary reports for future estimates
• Develop basic proposals covering scope, clarifications and pricing
• Prepare preliminary CPM schedules and estimate up to five projects at once
• Mentor PEs or interns through an estimating rotation and negotiate scope and deadlines with subcontractors and suppliers
• Plan for safety in the estimate, including access, fall protection, PPE and special training or certification needs
• Travel up to 25% of the time and work 50-55 hours per week with flexible hours

Required profile

• 3-5 years of experience in construction management or civil engineering
• Ability to read blueprints and contract specifications, and basic knowledge of contract/subcontract terms
• Valid driver's licence to operate rental cars while travelling
• Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs, pass a respirator fit test and work at heights up to 650 feet
• Willingness to work in uncomfortable or extreme conditions

Required skills

• Strong computer proficiency (Excel and other MS Office programs)
• Computerized estimating skills; experience with estimating software is a plus
• Basic construction math and scheduling skills
• CRM use and strong written and verbal communication
