Materials Engineer

About the role

AECOM is looking for a detail-oriented Materials Engineer to join its team in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The role covers the selection, specification and optimisation of materials for industrial and materials handling projects, working with multidisciplinary teams so that material choices meet project requirements, performance standards and cost objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse, select and specify materials for industrial projects such as materials handling systems, structural components and heavy industrial applications
• Develop and maintain material specifications, technical datasheets and documentation in line with codes and industry standards
• Perform material testing, quality control assessments and failure analysis
• Work with structural, mechanical and process engineering teams to optimise material choices for cost, durability and performance
• Coordinate with suppliers and vendors to source materials, evaluate alternatives and manage procurement
• Analyse material properties with industry-standard tools and modelling software, and prepare reports and calculations for design reviews
• Take part in design reviews, constructability assessments and project coordination meetings
• Manage testing schedules, quality assurance procedures and revision control of technical outputs
• Guide junior team members and stay current with emerging materials and best practices

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline
• At least 8 years of professional experience in materials engineering, materials selection or materials handling in the industrial sector
• Professional Engineer registration (ECSA, PEng or equivalent) is advantageous
• Experience with materials handling systems, heavy industrial projects or mining applications is preferred

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in design and analysis software such as AutoCAD, Revit or Navisworks
• Knowledge of material properties across metals, composites, polymers and ceramics
• Material testing procedures, quality control protocols and compliance with industry standards
• Supplier coordination, vendor management and material procurement
• Cost analysis and material optimisation
