Principal Transport Planner

About the role

The Principal Transport Planner will lead and deliver transport planning and traffic engineering studies for a variety of development, infrastructure and master‑planning projects. This senior position requires strong technical expertise, project delivery experience and the ability to coordinate with clients, authorities and multidisciplinary teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead transport planning and traffic engineering studies, including Traffic Impact Studies, transport assessments and mobility analyses.
• Perform traffic analysis, junction capacity assessments, network assessments, trip generation, mode‑share and parking demand modelling.
• Develop and review technical assumptions, methodologies, calculations and supporting documentation.
• Support strategic and detailed transport modelling, prepare model inputs and interpret outputs.
• Manage day‑to‑day technical activities, ensure delivery within programme, budget and quality targets, and coordinate inputs from multidisciplinary teams.
• Liaise with clients, government authorities, developers and other stakeholders, presenting findings and responding to technical comments.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Transport Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Economics or a related discipline.
• Chartered status or professional membership with CIHT, TPS or ICE.
• Typically 12+ years of experience in transport planning, scheme appraisal and business case development.
• Proven track record delivering multi‑disciplinary transport projects in line with DfT and Treasury guidance.
• Strong commercial awareness and experience in client relationship management and business development.
• Demonstrated leadership and mentoring of junior staff.
