Fiber Engineer - Well Services

About the role

The Fiber Engineer will support advanced well‑surveillance projects by deploying and managing fiber‑optic cables that deliver real‑time Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) data. This field‑intensive position is based in Abu Dhabi and requires hands‑on expertise in downhole fiber deployment and data quality control.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and supervise the installation of fiber‑optic cable inside capillary tubing for live production and injection wells.
• Prepare reels, terminate fibers, and connect surface interrogation units.
• Perform fusion and mechanical splicing, manage optical loss, and conduct OTDR testing before and after jobs.
• Troubleshoot fiber breaks, high attenuation events, and mechanical obstructions, providing root‑cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Set up, configure, and operate multi‑vendor DAS and DTS interrogation systems, adjusting acquisition parameters to optimise signal‑to‑noise ratio.
• Archive acquired data with proper metadata, depth/time referencing and handover documentation.
• Liaise with vendors for technical support, software updates and calibration.
• Contribute technical input for RFQs, scope of work documents and vendor qualification assessments.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in distributed fiber‑optic sensing (DFOS) and through‑tubing interventions.
• Proven track record of deploying fiber in live oil‑field environments.
• Ability to work independently in remote field locations.

Required skills

• Fusion splicing and mechanical splicing of single‑mode and multi‑mode fibers.
• OTDR trace analysis and optical loss budgeting.
• Operation of DAS and DTS interrogation systems (multiple vendors).
• Interpretation of DAS waterfall plots and DTS temperature profiles.
• Knowledge of specialty‑coated fibers and their performance under downhole temperature and pressure.
• Configuration of acquisition parameters such as PRF, gauge length, channel spacing and sampling frequency.
• Data archiving with metadata tagging and depth/time referencing.
