School Nurse

About the role

The school nurse provides professional nursing care within the school setting, promoting health, preventing illness, and supporting the educational process for children.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct health assessments, obtain health histories, and screen for vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, and other health deficits.
• Develop and implement individualized health plans, refer students and families to appropriate health resources, and coordinate with school personnel.
• Manage chronic health conditions, administer medication, and respond to acute illness, injury, or emotional disturbances.
• Promote communicable disease control through immunization programs, surveillance, and reporting.
• Provide health education to students, parents, and staff, and serve as a resource for health curriculum development.
• Participate in health policy formation, research, and evaluation of school health services.

Required profile

• Current license to practice professional nursing in Maine.
• Minimum three years of experience as a registered professional nurse.
• Certification required by the Department of Education.
• Baccalaureate degree in nursing or related field, or enrollment in a program to obtain one.
