Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer

About the role

The Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer at McDermott International is responsible for solving unique and complex mechanical engineering challenges that impact the business globally. As a specialist, the role influences resource allocation, program direction, and provides technical leadership across multidisciplinary projects.

Key responsibilities

• Perform conceptual, FEED and detailed mechanical analyses and designs in accordance with project specifications, codes and standards.
• Lead large mechanical engineering teams, planning and directing all aspects of discipline execution, including scope, schedule, and workforce resources.
• Manage interfaces with other disciplines, procurement, and external agencies to ensure clash‑free designs and compliance with contractual requirements.
• Prepare and review technical documents, design reports, vendor submittals, and cost estimates, and support variation orders and change notifications.
• Provide technical guidance during HAZOP meetings, 3D model reviews, and factory acceptance testing.
• Mentor and supervise junior engineers, fostering knowledge sharing and best‑practice development.

Required profile

• Proven experience in leading complex mechanical engineering projects within the oil & gas or construction sector.
• Strong communication and presentation skills, with a record of publishing technical papers or delivering technical briefings.
• Ability to anticipate objections, influence outcomes and negotiate resolutions with customers and authorities.
• Demonstrated capability to manage budgets, forecast resources and drive productivity improvements.
