Senior R&D Engineer – Hybrid & Hydrogen Propulsion

About the role

EDGE is seeking a senior R&D engineer to lead the development of next‑generation UAV propulsion systems, including battery‑electric, hybrid‑electric and hydrogen powertrains. The role combines technology scouting, concept design, modelling and hands‑on prototyping to expand Powertech’s product portfolio beyond conventional internal combustion engines.

Key responsibilities

• Define and maintain a propulsion technology roadmap aligned with UAV platform needs.
• Scout, benchmark and track suppliers for electric motors, inverters, batteries, fuel cells and hydrogen storage.
• Develop concept studies and trade‑off analyses for electric, hybrid‑electric and hydrogen powertrains.
• Model powertrain performance, energy consumption, thermal behavior and integration using first‑principles tools.
• Design, build and test demonstrators and bench rigs in collaboration with the Test team and the Powertech Italy facility.
• Coordinate test campaigns, instrumentation and data analysis.

Required profile

• Senior‑level engineering experience in UAV or aerospace propulsion systems.
• Proven track record in R&D of electric, hybrid‑electric or hydrogen powertrains.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to conduct trade studies on weight, endurance, power‑to‑weight, thermal management and cost.
• Hands‑on laboratory and test‑cell experience.

Required skills

• MATLAB/Simulink for system modelling and simulation.
• Python for data analysis and custom tool development.
• Powertrain modelling and sizing.
• Knowledge of electric motors, controllers/inverters, batteries, fuel cells and hydrogen storage technologies.
