Associate University Librarian – Public Services

About the role

The Associate University Librarian for Public Services leads the delivery of library services that support the mission of the American University of Sharjah. Reporting to the University Librarian, this senior professional shapes information literacy, reference, access, outreach and scholarly communication initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a team of public‑services librarians and staff, overseeing information literacy, collection development, circulation, reserves, learning assessment, outreach and liaison services.
• Plan, implement and continuously improve essential public services, ensuring library spaces are welcoming, accessible and aligned with the university’s strategic vision.
• Coordinate hiring, training and supervision of public‑services staff and participate in library space planning and facilities management.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA‑accredited program or equivalent.
• Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in an academic library, with demonstrated management, policy development and staff development skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication, strong customer‑service orientation and familiarity with higher‑education trends.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Experience with indexing and abstracting databases.
• Knowledge of Current Research Information Systems.
• Ability to use presentation or data‑visualisation software.
