Charge Nurse - ICU

About the role

The Charge Nurse – ICU leads clinical care and unit operations in a critical care environment, ensuring safe, high‑quality, evidence‑based patient care while coordinating admissions, transfers, and discharges.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver and oversee patient‑centered nursing care in the ICU according to evidence‑based practice.
• Provide clinical leadership, act as a role model, and support professional nursing practice.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and supportive environment for patients, families, and staff.
• Coordinate unit operations, including patient flow, admissions, transfers, and discharges.
• Allocate staffing and resources with the Nurse Manager to ensure safe patient care.
• Supervise, guide, and support nursing staff, ensuring appropriate skill mix and competency‑based assignments.
• Monitor patient acuity, evaluate interventions, and ensure timely escalation of care.
• Ensure compliance with infection control, fire safety, occupational health & safety, and hospital policies.
• Identify, report, and follow up on incidents, near‑misses, and hazards.
• Maintain high standards of clinical documentation and audit patient records.
• Liaise with patients and families to support care delivery and satisfaction.
• Participate in shared governance, quality improvement projects, audits, KPI monitoring, and data collection.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
• Valid nursing license.
• Minimum 6 years of clinical nursing experience, including leadership or Charge Nurse experience in an ICU.
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
