Clinical Coder – Coding Specialist

About the role

The Clinical Coder at SSMC is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and accurately coding hospital medical records. Using ICD-10‑CM, CPT and 3M Coding Reimbursement tools, the coder ensures proper sequencing of diagnoses and procedures for inpatient, outpatient, emergency and observation encounters.

Key responsibilities

• Assign ICD‑10‑CM diagnosis and CPT procedure codes for complex inpatient, outpatient and ED encounters.
• Review provider documentation to determine principal diagnosis, comorbidities, complications, secondary conditions and E&M services.
• Validate charges against health‑record documentation and ensure correct physician attribution and service timestamps.
• Utilize encoder software, online references and retrospective edit tools to resolve coding or documentation issues.
• Engage in query processes with physicians, CDI staff and other providers to clarify ambiguous information.
• Mentor and train junior coding staff and participate in coding‑query training sessions.
• Maintain production targets, accuracy rates and adhere to AHIMA ethical coding standards.
• Prepare statistical reports as requested by management.

Required profile

• Experience coding inpatient and outpatient encounters across multiple specialties.
• Ability to interpret and apply official coding guidelines and AHIMA standards.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
• Effective communication skills for interacting with physicians and revenue‑cycle teams.
