Commodity Buyer – Grains & Freight Management

About the role

As a Commodity Buyer you will be responsible for securing a reliable supply of key grain commodities such as milling wheat, hard wheat and semi‑hard wheat, as well as managing freight and shipment plans to ensure uninterrupted delivery to the business.

Key responsibilities

• Optimize sourcing and shipment plans to achieve long‑term commodity coverage at the best market position.
• Lead sourcing, tendering and direct spot purchases for wheat, corn, barley, SBM, DDGS and other feed commodities.
• Negotiate and finalize contracts with suppliers, monitor freight market pricing and manage ship nominations, demurrage and freight fixtures.
• Coordinate with finance for letters of credit, CAD payments and ensure timely supplier payments.
• Maintain communication with vendors, brokers, surveyors and shipping agencies, and provide market insights on competitor trends.
• Support R&D and commercial teams in exploring alternative raw materials and cost‑saving opportunities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s, diploma or master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Minimum 7 years of procurement/commodity buying experience, preferably in grain commodities and freight operations.
• Experience with foreign import/export regulations, GAFTA courses and knowledge of import procedures.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of procurement tools and freight fixtures.
• Advanced negotiation and contract management abilities.
• Expertise in tender preparation and analysis of supply offers.
• In‑depth understanding of grain commodities, transportation and storage requirements.
• Familiarity with stowage plans, charter parties and insurance of goods and shipments.
