CSSD Technician – Sterilization & Decontamination

About the role

The CSSD Technician is responsible for the safe decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgery service. The role ensures compliance with infection‑control, safety and regulatory standards at every stage of the process.

Key responsibilities

• Operate sterilization and decontamination equipment accurately and safely.
• Prepare, assemble, clean, lubricate, inspect and wrap instruments for sterilization.
• Maintain records, monitor quality‑control and infection‑control standards, and ensure compliance with Department of Health, OSHA, CDC and AORN guidelines.
• Manage inventory of surgical instruments, trays and supplies, coordinating with the Materials Department to keep stock at PAR levels.
• Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment to the CSSD Manager and follow replacement procedures.
• Provide guidance to nursing staff on proper sterilization techniques.
• Support asset management, validation testing of decontamination equipment and documentation of results.

Required profile

• Knowledge of infection‑control standards and regulatory requirements (Joint Commission, OSHA, CDC, AORN).
• Ability to follow standard precautions and use protective barriers.
• Attention to detail for instrument inspection, documentation and inventory control.
• Commitment to continuous education and competency in sterilization practices.

Required skills
