Data API Engineer (PostgreSQL, Haskell, PostgREST)

About the role

A partner company is looking for a Data API Engineer based in the United Arab Emirates to help improve the performance, reliability and capabilities of a PostgreSQL-powered Data API used by developers worldwide. The role contributes to the development of PostgREST, focusing on database connectivity, query performance, new features and a roadmap toward a scalable, multitenant API. It suits an engineer with strong Haskell expertise, a passion for PostgreSQL and a commitment to open-source software.

Key responsibilities

• Improve database connectivity by working on the PostgreSQL driver used by PostgREST, built on Hasql, and optimizing it for performance.
• Develop Data API capabilities by implementing new features, fixing bugs and moving toward a scalable, multitenant API.
• Investigate service issues, diagnose root causes and improve API stability and responsiveness.
• Strengthen observability through better monitoring and diagnostics.
• Handle technical incidents and escalated support requests, and reduce recurring issues.
• Collaborate with other engineering teams to resolve integration issues and support developers and users.
• Contribute to open-source projects and drive continuous improvement of code quality, architecture and debugging workflows.

Required profile

• At least 3 years of professional experience with Haskell.
• Experience debugging applications in Linux environments and solving complex technical problems.
• Strong track record of open-source contributions; maintaining an open-source project is an advantage.
• Experience providing technical support to users with varying levels of expertise.
• Ability to work independently in an asynchronous, globally distributed team.

Required skills

• Haskell and C, including systems-level code when needed.
• Strong SQL and PostgreSQL, including PL/pgSQL scripts.
• Analytical problem-solving and collaboration with cross-functional teams.
