Dredge Mechanic

About the role

The Dredge Mechanic is a core member of the dredging crew, responsible for maintaining and repairing the mechanical systems on a cutter suction dredger. This hands‑on position ensures the vessel’s engines, pumps and hydraulic equipment operate reliably during dredging and transit.

Key responsibilities

• Operate, monitor and maintain main and auxiliary engines, pumps, compressors and hydraulic systems.
• Carry out routine inspections, planned maintenance and breakdown repairs according to the PMS and Chief Engineer’s instructions.
• Assist in the operation and upkeep of dredge pumps, cutter drive systems, gearboxes and related machinery.
• Monitor machinery parameters, alarms and log readings during dredging and sailing.
• Perform overhauls of engines, valves, pumps, filters and other mechanical components as required.
• Ensure proper lubrication, cooling and fuel system functioning at all times.
• Maintain cleanliness and housekeeping of the engine room and machinery spaces.
• Follow safety procedures, permit‑to‑work systems and company HSE policies.
• Support bunkering, engine trials and emergency situations, reporting defects and spare requirements promptly.

Required profile

• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• 5–10 years of experience on dredgers or similar marine vessels.
• Valid STCW training certification, STCW COP III/IV or higher.
• ILO/MLC seafarer’s medical fitness certificate.
