Dredge Mechanic – Marine Maintenance Specialist

About the role

The Dredge Mechanic is a key member of the dredging crew, responsible for maintaining and repairing mechanical systems on a cutter suction dredger. This hands‑on position ensures vessel reliability and optimal equipment performance.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and inspections on dredging equipment, including pumps, engines, and hydraulic systems.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical issues promptly, ensuring minimal downtime for the dredger.
• Install and maintain new equipment as required by dredging projects.
• Oversee safe operation of all mechanical systems and implement necessary safety protocols.
• Collaborate with the dredging crew to optimize equipment performance and efficiency.
• Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities and repairs.
• Train and supervise junior mechanics or deckhands on basic maintenance tasks.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and environmental standards.
• Assist in developing and implementing maintenance schedules and procedures.
• Stay updated with the latest advancements in dredging technology and best practices.

Required profile

• Minimum of 5 years of experience as a mechanic, preferably in a marine or dredging environment.
• Strong background in mechanical engineering or a related field.
• Excellent troubleshooting skills and a problem‑solving mindset.
• Familiarity with cutter suction dredgers and their unique mechanical systems.
• Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
• Good physical condition and ability to work in a dynamic, outdoor environment.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including shifts and overtime.
• Valid certifications or licenses related to marine engineering or mechanics (e.g., STCW) preferred.
• Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with the dredging crew.
