First Watchkeeping Engineer – Dredger

About the role

The First Watchkeeping Engineer on a dredger is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all engine‑room machinery during assigned watches. You will monitor main engines, generators, pumps and auxiliary systems, ensuring compliance with company and maritime regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain continuous watchkeeping, promptly detecting and responding to alarms, faults or abnormal conditions.
• Conduct routine inspections, record readings and monitor performance of engines, generators, pumps and auxiliary equipment.
• Assist the Chief Engineer with preventive and corrective maintenance tasks.
• Prepare and update engine‑room logbooks, checklists and other statutory records.
• Ensure adherence to safety procedures, permit‑to‑work systems and environmental regulations.
• Support fuel management, lubrication and energy‑efficiency measures, including bunkering operations.
• Coordinate with deck and dredging teams to facilitate smooth vessel operations.
• Supervise and guide junior engineers and engine crew during the watch.
• Participate in emergency response actions such as fire, flooding or machinery breakdowns.
• Assist in dry‑docking, major overhauls and other major maintenance activities as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 10 years of experience on marine vessels, preferably dredgers.
• Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer or 2nd Engineer.
• Strong technical knowledge, alertness and ability to work effectively in a team.
