About the role
The First Watchkeeping Engineer is responsible for the overall maintenance and operation of the dredger’s engine room. This role leads a team of engineers, ensures safe and efficient engine performance, and supports the Chief Engineer in planned maintenance activities.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain a safe and efficient engine room watch in line with company procedures and statutory regulations.
- Monitor and operate main propulsion machinery, auxiliary systems, and related equipment.
- Ensure pressure, temperature and level parameters stay within safe limits.
- Respond promptly to alarms, machinery faults and emergency situations.
- Carry out routine inspections and preventive maintenance during watchkeeping duties.
- Assist the Chief Engineer and 2nd Engineer with planned maintenance and repairs.
- Manage fuel, lube oil and cooling systems during operations.
- Maintain accurate engine room logbooks and records as required.
- Ensure compliance with MARPOL, SOLAS and other environmental regulations.
- Supervise and guide junior engine room crew during assigned watches.
- Maintain housekeeping standards and cleanliness in the engine room.
- Follow permit‑to‑work systems and safety procedures for all maintenance work.
- Coordinate with the bridge and other departments for smooth vessel operations.
- Participate in drills, safety meetings and emergency preparedness activities.
- Report any defects, abnormalities or safety concerns to senior engineers immediately.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering.
- Basic and Advanced STCW training certificates.
- Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer.
- Minimum 5 years rank experience on a dredger, preferably on SPCSD.
Required skills
- Strong knowledge of marine engineering principles.
- Proficiency in engine room operations and monitoring.
- Experience with main propulsion and auxiliary system operation.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Fuel, lube oil and cooling system management.
- Accurate engine room logbook documentation.
- Compliance with MARPOL and SOLAS regulations.
