IP Medical Coder – Hospital Claims Processing

About the role

The IP Medical Coder is responsible for ensuring accurate coding of inpatient and outpatient services and for processing claims to insurance companies. The role works closely with clinicians, billing staff and insurance representatives to maintain compliance and timely reimbursement.

Key responsibilities

• Verify ICD‑10‑CM, CPT and HCPCS codes on UCF/discharge summaries for daily claim submission to insurance companies.
• Upload and reconcile inpatient (IP) and outpatient (OP) e‑claims through the hospital’s portals.
• Analyze documentation, generate reports on coding discrepancies, and provide feedback to clinicians.
• Coordinate with insurance medical teams, billing supervisors and accountants for claim resubmission, follow‑up and final sign‑off.
• Assist consultants and physicians with coding clarifications and address specialty‑specific rejections.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university; nursing, pharmacy or physiotherapy background preferred.
• Professional certification from AAPC or AHIMA is mandatory.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work with medical documentation and coding software.

Required skills

• Proficiency in ICD‑10‑CM coding.
• Knowledge of CPT and HCPCS coding systems.
• Experience with medical claims processing and e‑claim submission.
• Ability to generate coding reports and perform claim reconciliation.
