Mechanical Engineer – Switchgear Design

About the role

Execute detailed mechanical design and engineering of medium‑voltage switchgear panels and assemblies, ensuring structural integrity, manufacturability and compliance with IEC requirements while coordinating with electrical and production teams.

Key responsibilities

• Design sheet‑metal enclosures, panel structures and internal mounting for MV switchgear (up to 36 kV), producing GA, fabrication and part drawings.
• Perform structural strength checks, support short‑circuit withstand analysis and design busbar supports, cable compartments and breaker mounting structures.
• Develop and maintain standard mechanical design modules, optimise for cost and manufacturability, and incorporate shop‑floor feedback.
• Coordinate thermal and ventilation requirements with the electrical team and support temperature‑rise test preparations.
• Assist production with fabrication feasibility, FAT preparation and resolution of mechanical NCRs.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• 4–8 years of experience in switchgear, panel board or similar sheet‑metal enclosure industry.
• Detail‑oriented with a practical understanding of manufacturing constraints and a continuous‑improvement mindset.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of sheet‑metal design and fabrication processes.
• Hands‑on experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD or similar 3D modelling tools.
• Understanding of IEC 62271 enclosure and internal arc requirements.
• Knowledge of surface treatment, powder coating and corrosion‑protection standards.
