About the role
The Medical Coder works under general supervision to abstract and assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes for both inpatient and outpatient records. The role supports doctors, nursing staff, and the billing team to ensure proper documentation and maximize revenue.
Key responsibilities
- Code outpatient claims using E&M, CPT, ICD, and USCLS codes.
- Code inpatient claims to determine appropriate DRG and severity levels.
- Code day cases, observations, and all approval requests with relevant ICD, CPT, HCPCS, and service codes.
- Re‑evaluate and adjust codes on resubmissions to justify services.
- Provide coding guidance to doctors, nurses, and the insurance billing team.
- Prepare the facility for coding audits and maintain statistical coding data for management.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a medical background.
- Experience in coding inpatient and outpatient claims and familiarity with hospital documentation standards.
