Optometrist – Ophthalmology

About the role

The Optometrist will work alongside the medical team to support optometry services and provide both independent and collaborative care for a range of ophthalmic conditions, including acute eye problems. The role involves comprehensive eye examinations, vision testing, and the prescription and fitting of spectacles and contact lenses.

Key responsibilities

• Take detailed ocular and medical histories, including pre‑ and post‑surgical information and medication use.
• Perform visual acuity assessments (unaided, BCVA, VACC) using Snellen charts.
• Conduct objective and subjective refraction with auto‑refractometers, retinoscopes, phoropters, lensometers and trial lens sets.
• Operate advanced diagnostic equipment such as OCT, Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer, specular microscope, corneal topographer, digital retinal fundus camera, IOL Master 700 and Heidelberg OCT.
• Fit and dispense hard and soft contact lenses, including cycloplegic refraction for infants and children.
• Examine eyes with slit lamp, assess intra‑ocular pressure using contact and non‑contact tonometers, and perform ocular muscle testing.
• Prescribe glasses and contact lenses with physician consent and counsel patients on proper use and maintenance.
• Participate in quality improvement, safety activities, and adhere to SSMC OSHMS procedures.

Required profile

• Qualified optometrist with experience in ophthalmic care.
• Ability to recognize eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataract, and systemic conditions like diabetes.
• Commitment to patient confidentiality and professional communication.
• Willingness to complete annual education requirements and follow dress‑code standards.
