Pipe Operator – Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger

About the role

The Pipe Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the dredge pipeline system on a trailing suction hopper dredger. Working closely with the Dredge Master, Chief Engineer and deck crew, you will ensure continuous suction, discharge and shore connections while maintaining strict safety and environmental standards.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and monitor suction, discharge and shore pipeline sections, controlling valves and pipe joints.
• Assist in connecting and disconnecting floating pipelines during dredging and reclamation cycles.
• Maintain proper alignment and stability of pipelines to prevent leaks or ruptures.
• Monitor pressure gauges and flow rates, reporting any abnormalities.
• Coordinate pumping and discharge operations with the control room and deck crew.
• Perform routine inspection, cleaning and maintenance of pipes, joints and rubber hoses.
• Detect and rectify minor leakages, blockages or pipeline failures.
• Support anchor handling and positioning related to pipeline laying.
• Maintain radio communication with relevant departments during operations.
• Assist emergency response in case of pipeline burst or spillage.
• Record pipeline operations, maintenance activities and incidents as required.

Required profile

• Basic STCW training certificate and valid Medical CoC as a Rating.
• 5‑10 years of rank experience on modern trailing suction hopper dredgers.
• Proven ability to work in high‑pressure pumping environments and follow strict safety procedures.
