Post-Doctoral Associate - Structural Materials, 3D Printing and Modeling

About the role

The Future-Generation of Resilient and Infrastructure Design Technology Hub (Future-GRID TecH), led by Professor Mohamed Moustafa in the Division of Engineering at NYU Abu Dhabi, is recruiting a Post-Doctoral Associate to work on structural materials, 3D printing and modeling. The project focuses on developing new structural materials and rethinking resilient infrastructure systems. The position is part of the Kawader program, a three-year national research fellowship for Emirati graduates.

Key responsibilities

• Work and lead multiple research projects on new structural systems using structural steel and ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and additive construction/manufacturing.
• Use industry-scale 3D concrete and metal printers to fabricate and test structural components.
• Carry out computational modeling and finite element simulation of UHPC and 3D printed components.
• Conduct experimental, analytical and computational research in a multidisciplinary team of PhD scientists and undergraduates.
• Publish in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, mentor undergraduates and help write grant proposals under faculty supervision.

Required profile

• PhD in Civil, Structural, Mechanical or Material Engineering; Nuclear Engineering and Material Science also welcome.
• Extensive experience in structural engineering, steel and concrete design, and finite element modeling.
• Strong communication and presentation skills and a strong research profile.
• CV, statement of interest, transcripts and two letters of recommendation.

Preferred qualifications

• Training beyond the main PhD focus in additive manufacturing, machine learning or artificial intelligence.
• Expertise in computational mechanics, finite element simulation and modeling.
• Programming skills (Python and C++ preferred) and GUI development.
• Laboratory and multi-scale experimental testing at material, component and structural levels.
