Radiation Protection Team Leader

About the role

The Radiation Protection Team Leader will drive the implementation of radiation protection standards at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, ensuring compliance with regulatory, safety, nuclear, industrial and environmental requirements. This role oversees all phases of radiation safety activities, from planning through execution to post‑close‑out, to support overall business performance.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee decontamination and contaminated‑area surveys during outages to maintain ALARA principles.
• Monitor on‑hand radiation activity in controlled zones and ensure accurate dose measurement.
• Lead transportation and storage of radioactive material during fuel assembly operations.
• Ensure continuous monitoring of liquid radioactive waste and operation of scintillation, gamma and low‑level alpha/beta counters.
• Direct quality control, calibration and maintenance of detection equipment such as HPGe, LSC and low‑level counters.
• Manage the radioactivity counting laboratory and Radiation Monitoring System, coordinating maintenance as needed.
• Provide operational planning input, track KPIs and prepare timely performance reports.
• Verify qualified staffing levels, develop training programs and evaluate staff performance.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related scientific field.
• Minimum 6 years of relevant experience, including at least 2 years in a nuclear power plant environment.
• At least 6 months of direct participation in radiation protection activities at a nuclear facility.
• Proven ability to lead safety teams and manage complex radiation protection programs.

Required skills

• High Purity Germanium (HPGe) spectroscopy operation and calibration.
• Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC) usage and maintenance.
• Low‑level Alpha/Beta Counter operation.
• Radiation Monitoring System (RMS) calibration and troubleshooting.
• Effluent control and monitoring procedures.
• Decontamination techniques and contaminated‑area surveying.
