Research Scientist – Advanced Membrane Technologies

About the role

The Water Research Center at NYU Abu Dhabi seeks a highly motivated Research Scientist to lead advanced membrane technology projects for sustainable desalination, working under Professor Raed Hashaikeh.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct experimental and analytical research on membrane‑based desalination technologies such as reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, nanofiltration and membrane distillation.
• Develop and test novel functional membrane materials at bench and pilot scales, including design and execution of lab and field studies.
• Analyze and interpret data, prepare publications, patents and present findings at conferences.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across mechanical, chemical, materials and environmental engineering.

Required profile

• PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a closely related field.
• At least six years of post‑doctoral or industry experience in membrane science and desalination.
• Strong publication record with first‑author papers.
• Excellent communication, organizational skills and ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Membrane fabrication and characterization.
• Analytical techniques: XRD, TGA, DSC, DMA, BET, porometry.
• Experience with reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, nanofiltration and membrane distillation processes.
