Service Technician - MaK Marine Engines

About the role

Caterpillar is looking for a Service Technician to work in its MaK Middle East FZCO workshop in Dubai, UAE. The technician performs service, maintenance, overhauling and repair of MaK medium-speed marine engine components independently, and also goes onboard vessels to service engine components when required. The work calls for broad mechanical skills, basic diagnostics and knowledge of workshop machinery, machining, tooling and medium-speed marine engines.

Key responsibilities

• Service, overhaul and repair of MaK medium-speed engine components, including machining of cylinder head valve stems, valve seat inserts, oversize valve seats, valve guides, cylinder liner honing, diamond lapping, fuel injection pumps, injectors, pistons, connecting rods and turbochargers.
• Perform precision in-place machining on engines in the field, such as liner top and bottom landing surface machining.
• Operate workshop equipment safely, including lathes, milling machines, cutters, grinders, honing and lapping machines, heating, welding, lifting and hoisting equipment.
• Measure and calibrate engine parts accurately with micrometers, dial indicators, gauges and feeler gauges, and prepare calibration and service reports.
• Machining, lap, grind and custom fabricate steel parts to tight tolerances, and inspect, test and analyse components, including crack testing.
• Replace parts and assemblies, reassemble components, carry out quality assurance testing and follow defined workshop workflows.
• Work from service and maintenance manuals, technical information and schematics, and perform failure analysis and troubleshooting.
• Communicate effectively with technical staff, colleagues and vendors, and use basic soldering and brazing skills when needed.

Required profile

• 8 years of experience in similar marine or large medium-speed engine component workshop servicing, repair or machining, or equivalent schooling.
• Good mechanical comprehension and strong communication skills with technical staff, customers and colleagues.
• Basic computer skills and the ability to speak, read and write English.
• Knowledge of 5S housekeeping, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and technical troubleshooting.
