Telephone Operator

About the role

The Telephone Operator will manage the main telephone and emergency communication systems for American Hospital Dubai, ensuring prompt, courteous service to patients, visitors and staff. This role supports the hospital’s commitment to safe, patient‑focused care by handling calls, emergency codes and public announcements efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Answer incoming external and internal calls within three rings, maintaining professional telephone etiquette.
• Direct callers to the appropriate department, staff member or service.
• Handle patient complaints and forward them to the relevant Clinic Manager or Supervisor promptly.
• Create and broadcast 24‑hour public announcements via the Public Address system.
• Test and respond to emergency code systems (Code Blue, Code Green) on a weekly basis.
• Maintain and update hospital extensions, call lists, physician contacts and department heads.
• Assist in orienting new switchboard staff and ensure the work area remains clean and organized.
• Report equipment failures, safety issues or supply shortages to the Patient Relations Supervisor.

Required profile

• High school graduate.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Arabic.
• Basic computer literacy and familiarity with customer‑service principles.
• Understanding of medical terminology and hospital accreditation standards (CQI, JCIA) is advantageous.

Required skills

• Cerner System proficiency.
