Tug Chief Officer

About the role

The Tug Chief Officer will support the Master in the safe and efficient operation of tug and vessel movements, ensuring compliance with NMDC regulations and the company safety management system.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Master in day‑to‑day vessel and tug movements in accordance with NMDC regulations and the safety management system.
• Determine course and towing speed using knowledge of local winds, weather, tides and currents.
• Steer the tugboat to push or pull vessels, berth and unberth ships while avoiding hazards, employing radar, sonar depth finder, compass, sextant and other navigation aids.
• Direct placement of suction hoses or siphons to pump water from vessel holds and coordinate leak repairs.
• Ensure compliance with fleet regulations, national laws and local port/harbor requirements.
• Maintain crew awareness of applicable risk assessments and promote safety and environmental protection.
• Complete statutory documentation such as official log books, departmental logs and oil record books.

Required profile

• Valid Master Mariner certificate for vessels up to 3000 GT, Chief Mate Class 1 II/2, STCW unlimited, recognized by state and international authorities.
• Proven experience in tug operations and vessel navigation.

Required skills

• Operation of radar and sonar depth‑finding equipment.
• Compass and sextant navigation.
• Knowledge of tides, currents and local weather patterns.
• Vessel steering and tug towing techniques.
