Tug Chief Officer – Vessel Operations

About the role

The Tug Chief Officer supports the Master in the daily operation of a tugboat, ensuring safe and efficient vessel movements in line with NMDC policies and maritime regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Master with all day‑to‑day tug operations, including positioning, pushing, and pulling vessels.
• Determine optimal course and towing speed using knowledge of local winds, weather, tides and currents.
• Navigate the tug using radar, sonic depth finder, compass, sextant and visual aids such as lighthouses and buoys.
• Direct placement of suction hoses or siphons to pump water and coordinate leak‑repair activities.
• Ensure compliance with fleet regulations, national laws and local port/harbour requirements.
• Communicate clear orders and conduct periodic safety management system reviews.
• Induct new crew members on vessel familiarisation, operational training and safety procedures.

Required profile

• Familiarity with fleet regulations and safety management system documentation.
• Strong understanding of local maritime conditions (winds, tides, currents).
• Ability to motivate and safeguard crew while maintaining environmental standards.
• Effective communication skills for issuing unambiguous orders.
