Commis 1 - Kitchen Assistant

About the role

Bab Al Shams Desert Resort, set among Dubai's dunes and rooted in Emirati culture, is hiring a Commis 1. The Commis 1 supports the kitchen team by helping with ingredient preparation, cooking and keeping the kitchen clean and organised, working under the guidance of senior chefs to learn cooking techniques and kitchen operations.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with prepping ingredients according to the chef's specifications
• Prepare stocks, sauces, garnishes and basic items as required
• Cook or prepare certain dishes under supervision
• Help organise the kitchen, keeping it clean and stocked with tools and equipment
• Maintain and clean kitchen tools, utensils and equipment after use
• Follow safety and hygiene procedures and ensure food meets the restaurant's standards for presentation, taste and quality
• Attend training sessions to improve cooking techniques and kitchen operations
• Collaborate with chefs and kitchen assistants and take direction from senior chefs

Required profile

• Hospitality qualification
• Basic food hygiene certificate
• 1 year in a similar position in a five-star hotel
• Basic culinary knowledge or qualification (e.g. culinary school)
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with strong attention to detail and good communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to handle kitchen tools and equipment safely and to produce checklists

Required skills

• Microsoft Windows applications (an asset)
• HACCP control knowledge
• Good product knowledge
