Consultant Physician – Allergy and Immunology

About the role

This is a foundational consultant appointment to create and lead a new Division of Allergy and Immunology at SSMC. The post-holder will design, launch and manage a comprehensive clinical service for patients with allergic and immunological conditions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert assessment, diagnosis and management across the full spectrum of allergic and immunological diseases, including drug, food, venom, respiratory, skin and immunodeficiency disorders.
• Establish and run specialist outpatient clinics and a day‑case service for skin testing, allergen immunotherapy, drug and food challenges, desensitisation protocols and biologic therapy.
• Lead inpatient consultations, anaphylaxis response and complex immunology cases across the hospital.
• Design and implement the operating model, clinical pathways, protocols, formulary and quality standards for the new division.
• Build and lead a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with nursing, pharmacy, dietetics, laboratory medicine and multiple specialty services.
• Develop referral pathways, business planning and capacity modelling for sustainable service growth.
• Deliver teaching for residents, fellows and allied health professionals and help create a fellowship training programme.
• Support clinical research, disease registries and quality‑improvement initiatives using SSMC’s academic infrastructure.
• Lead clinical governance, audit, patient safety, accreditation and compliance with Department of Health standards.

Required profile

• Medical qualification with registration to practice as a consultant physician.
• At least 2 years of relevant experience in allergy and immunology.
• Demonstrated leadership, organisational and academic abilities to build a new specialist service.
• Experience in multidisciplinary team management and service development.
