Drainage Engineer

About the role

Artelia is seeking an experienced Drainage Engineer to plan, analyse, design and support the delivery of stormwater, surface‑water and subsurface‑drainage systems for airport infrastructure. The role combines hydrological and hydraulic engineering, flood‑risk management and sustainable drainage to protect aircraft operations, pavements, utilities and the environment.

Key responsibilities

• Hydrology & Flood‑Risk Assessment – establish criteria, build hydraulic models and develop flood mitigation strategies for extreme weather.
• Stormwater & Infrastructure Design – size and design pipe networks, attenuation facilities, pumping stations and complex apron drainage with oil interception and de‑icing containment.
• Sustainability & Resilience – champion nature‑based solutions, climate‑resilient designs and water‑quality treatments meeting aviation safety standards.
• BIM & Cross‑Discipline Coordination – resolve clashes in federated models, maintain data integrity in the Common Data Environment and streamline construction handovers.
• Smart Engineering & Digital Delivery – use approved AI and automation tools to process data, check model constraints and optimise deliverables within cybersecurity guidelines.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering; a master’s in hydraulics, hydrology or water‑resources engineering is advantageous.
• Minimum eight years of drainage and storm‑water design experience, including at least three years on airports or major infrastructure projects.
• Hands‑on capability with hydraulic and hydrological software such as Civil 3D, Storm and Sanitary Analysis, InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage, HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS, SWMM.
• Strong knowledge of rainfall analysis, IDF development, rational and hydrograph methods, hydraulic grade lines, open‑channel flow, detention, infiltration and flood‑risk assessment.
• Experience with airport apron drainage, pollution control, pavement drainage and multidisciplinary coordination.
• Advanced AutoCAD and Civil 3D skills; GIS, BIM coordination and CDE workflows are a plus.
• Competence in AI‑assisted engineering workflows, data‑protection awareness and documentation of assumptions.
• Site experience in drainage construction, inspection, testing, temporary works or commissioning is advantageous.
