Emergency Medical Technician - Basic

About the role

Speciality Hospital Abu Dhabi is hiring an Emergency Medical Technician (Basic) to respond to medical emergency calls, provide basic life support at the scene and transport patients to the hospital. The EMT ensures personnel and vehicle readiness, works closely with communications officers, field supervisors, the emergency department, police and fire departments, and follows departmental policies, safety and infection control standards.

Key responsibilities

• Respond to calls from the communications dispatcher, use radio communication skills and take the fastest route to reach the patient.
• Assess patients, take and record vital signs, perform primary and secondary examinations and conduct scene size-up.
• Provide basic pre-hospital care: open and maintain the airway, CPR and rescue breathing, AED, oxygen, bandaging, wound care, spinal immobilisation and control of bleeding.
• Administer medications (aspirin for suspected myocardial infarction, epinephrine auto-injector for anaphylaxis, intramuscular, intranasal, intravenous and nebulised medication), insert an IV cannula and give crystalloids, monitor the heart with a 3-lead ECG and perform defibrillation.
• Transport patients to the ambulance, assist in moving them, and hand over information to the receiving facility.
• Maintain and restock ambulance equipment, clean and disinfect it, and keep vehicles mechanically ready.
• Complete accurate pre-hospital care reports and attend continuing education and refresher training.

Required profile

• Valid DOH license as an Emergency Medical Technician (Basic).
• Graduate of an internationally recognised EMT-Basic course (minimum 4 weeks, 6 weeks preferred) or equivalent.
• At least two years of experience.
• Currently licensed in the country of origin and holding a DOH license to practice in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
• Fluent spoken and written English; Arabic is desirable but not essential.
• Valid UAE driving licence to drive an ambulance.

Required skills

• BLS certification and PHTLS.
• Basic life support, CPR, AED and airway management.
• IV cannulation and medication administration.
• Understanding of body substance isolation and basic medical-legal principles.
