Family Medicine Specialist

About the role

The Family Medicine Specialist provides comprehensive, evidence-based primary healthcare to patients of all ages in the hospital setting. The role covers assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and follow-up of acute and chronic conditions, health promotion and coordination of care with other departments and specialists. It reports to the Head of Department / Medical Director and complies with Abu Dhabi Department of Health regulations and hospital policies.

Key responsibilities

• Provide family medicine consultations and primary care, obtain histories, examine patients and interpret investigations.
• Diagnose and manage common acute illnesses and chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma and dyslipidemia.
• Develop treatment and follow-up plans based on clinical guidelines, and provide preventive care, screenings, immunizations and lifestyle counseling.
• Manage patients with multiple comorbidities and coordinate multidisciplinary care.
• Recognize emergencies, refer patients to specialists and ensure continuity of care after specialist visits or discharge.
• Prescribe within approved scope, educate patients, maintain accurate electronic medical records and obtain informed consent.
• Take part in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, departmental meetings and continuing medical education.

Required profile

• MBBS or equivalent recognized primary medical qualification.
• Postgraduate qualification in Family Medicine meeting Abu Dhabi DoH PQR requirements.
• Valid Abu Dhabi DoH professional license or eligibility for licensure.
• Relevant clinical experience in family medicine, primary care or an equivalent setting.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Arabic is an advantage.

Required skills

• Electronic medical records and hospital information systems (preferred).
• Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning and decision-making.
• Effective patient communication, counseling and teamwork.
