Java Backend Engineer - Financial Services

About the role

A client is hiring a Java Engineer to build and enhance the backend platforms powering critical financial services workflows. You will work in a collaborative engineering team, turning business requirements into secure, scalable and reliable systems used in a regulated environment. The role suits someone who enjoys clean architecture, high-quality code and meaningful business problems; previous experience in financial services and B2C is preferred.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test and maintain Java-based backend services and APIs.
• Build and enhance microservices using Spring Boot and modern Java.
• Translate business and product requirements into robust technical solutions.
• Develop RESTful APIs and integrate with internal and external systems.
• Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and contribute to code reviews.
• Improve application performance, reliability, security and scalability.
• Work with relational databases, messaging systems and CI/CD pipelines.
• Troubleshoot production issues and support continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with product, QA, business analysts and senior engineers.

Required profile

• Strong commercial experience with Java (ideally Java 17+).
• Solid hands-on experience with Spring / Spring Boot and microservices.
• Experience building REST APIs and backend integrations.
• Strong understanding of OOP, design patterns and clean coding practices.
• Experience with SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle or SQL Server.
• Familiarity with Git, automated testing, CI/CD and Agile delivery.
• Good problem-solving skills and a pragmatic, ownership-driven mindset.
• Financial services, banking, payments, fintech or other regulated-industry experience is advantageous but not essential.
• Nice to have: Kafka or other messaging technologies, Docker and Kubernetes, cloud experience (AWS, Azure or GCP), and performance tuning or JVM diagnostics experience.
