Mechanical Design Manager - mCUP

About the role

The Mechanical Design Manager for Modular Central Utility Plant (mCUP) manages and coordinates mechanical design and engineering for modular central utility plant projects, including packaged chiller plants, pumping systems, cooling tower systems, utility and chiller skids, piping modules and associated plant infrastructure. The role covers the full design lifecycle, from reviewing customer tender documents and concept development through detailed engineering, customer approval, manufacturing and fabrication documentation, production support, installation, testing and commissioning support.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate mechanical design for mCUP systems, packaged chiller plants, utility skids, cooling towers, pumping systems and piping modules.
• Review customer tender documents (P&IDs, layouts, specifications, equipment schedules, scope documents) and turn them into design concepts, layouts and detailed engineering deliverables.
• Develop, review and maintain P&IDs, mechanical layouts, general arrangement and piping drawings, equipment interfaces and design documentation.
• Perform and review hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing, flow and velocity checks, pressure-drop and pump-head calculations and equipment sizing inputs.
• Prepare and review drawings, calculations and technical data for customer and consultant submittals, and respond to review comments.
• Create and review manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, spool, module and installation drawings, ensuring dimensions, material, connection and tolerance details.
• Coordinate mechanical design across multiple manufacturing facilities, establishing consistent drawing standards and interfaces.
• Lead mechanical BIM coordination, model reviews and clash detection, and coordinate interfaces with electrical, controls, structural, architectural, fire and life safety disciplines.
• Support installation, testing and commissioning, and update engineering documents to reflect approved site changes.
• Support Sales, Estimation, Procurement, Quality, Manufacturing and Project teams with design inputs, proposals and risk identification.
• Plan and prioritize deliverables, run design reviews and drawing checks, and promote standardization and reusable design practices.

Required profile

• Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Substantial experience in district cooling plants, packaged chiller plants, modular central utility plants, utility skids, cooling tower systems, pumping systems or comparable industrial mechanical systems.
• Hands-on experience with P&IDs, plant layouts, mechanical calculations, customer submittals, manufacturing and fabrication drawings and installation documentation.
• Experience coordinating engineering deliverables across more than one manufacturing facility or geographically distributed team is strongly preferred.
• Experience supporting Sales, Estimation, Procurement, Quality, Manufacturing, Project Delivery and Site teams in an engineered-to-order environment is preferred.

Required skills

• Knowledge of mechanical, piping, pressure-testing, fabrication, quality and safety standards relevant to modular plant projects.
• BIM coordination and clash detection.
