Outpatient Medical Coder

About the role

The Outpatient Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing and translating outpatient clinical documentation into accurate billing codes. This role supports the revenue cycle by ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and payer requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Review outpatient medical records, physician notes, and diagnostic reports to assign appropriate ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes.
• Identify missing or unclear documentation and coordinate with clinical staff for clarification.
• Maintain coding accuracy, correct sequencing of diagnoses and procedures, and support denial management.
• Participate in internal audits, quality reviews, and ongoing coding education.

Required profile

• Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Coding, Health Information Management, or a related field.
• Professional coding certification (CPC, CCS, CCA) preferred.
• Knowledge of outpatient coding guidelines, medical terminology, and anatomy.
• Previous experience in outpatient medical coding is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency with ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
• Experience using EMR/EHR platforms and coding software.
• Strong analytical ability to interpret clinical documentation.
