Planning Engineer - Transmission

About the role

The Planning Engineer plays a key role in the strategic planning, design and execution of cable-related infrastructure for the transmission network and substations. The ideal candidate has extensive experience managing and coordinating large-scale cable projects, including overhead and underground cables and substation cable systems. The position is full time.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the planning and design of transmission and substation cable systems, including medium and high-voltage cables, meeting performance, safety and regulatory requirements
• Oversee routing plans, installation methods and cable specifications, and conduct load flow studies and fault analysis
• Plan, schedule and manage cable installation projects, keeping schedules aligned with network goals and timelines
• Lead design reviews and provide technical guidance on cable layout, routing, connections and protection schemes
• Analyse cable performance, load flow data and fault occurrences, and prepare technical reports and presentations for management, stakeholders and regulators
• Develop cost estimates, material and labour requirements, monitor expenditures and recommend cost-effective solutions

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or a related field (Master's preferred)
• Advanced training or certification in power systems planning, cable design or project management (e.g. PMP) is a plus
• Minimum 4-5 years of hands-on experience planning, designing and managing transmission and substation cable systems, with a focus on high- and medium-voltage cables
• Proven track record managing large-scale cable installation and upgrade projects
• Extensive experience in cable system design, protection, fault analysis and integration with other power network components

Required skills

• In-depth knowledge of power transmission, substation infrastructure and cable design standards
• Cable sizing, fault current analysis, load flow studies and electrical network modelling
• Familiarity with PSS/E, ETAP, CYME, AutoCAD or similar simulation and design software
