PMC Senior HSE Design Engineer

About the role

Wood is looking for an experienced PMC Senior HSE Design Engineer in Abu Dhabi. The role ensures that Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) requirements are integrated into engineering design, identifying and mitigating safety, environmental and operational risks during the design phase so that projects run safely, compliantly and sustainably for a high-profile client.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the integration of HSE requirements into engineering design throughout the project lifecycle.
• Conduct and facilitate HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, QRA, Bow-Tie and Fire Risk Assessment studies.
• Identify design-related hazards and embed effective risk mitigation measures.
• Apply Safety-in-Design (SiD) and Inherently Safer Design (ISD) principles.
• Review and approve safety deliverables such as safety philosophies, loss prevention philosophies and risk assessment reports.
• Review plant layouts, equipment arrangements, facility siting, fire protection systems, firewater networks, fire and gas detection, ESD systems and hazardous area classifications.
• Perform consequence modeling, dispersion analysis, thermal radiation studies and ALARP assessments.
• Review engineering deliverables such as PFDs, P&IDs, cause-and-effect diagrams, plot plans and safety studies.
• Coordinate with process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, civil and operations teams, and lead technical, design, constructability and operational readiness reviews.
• Support environmental risk assessments, audits, regulatory reviews and safety workshops, and monitor closure of recommendations.
• Mentor junior HSE and Technical Safety Engineers and support commissioning, start-up and handover from a safety perspective.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Process, Safety, Mechanical or Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.
• Typically 15+ years of experience in HSE design, technical safety, process safety, loss prevention or risk management in oil and gas, LNG, petrochemical, refinery, offshore or energy projects.
• Extensive experience in EPC, EPCM or PMC project environments across FEED, detailed design, construction, commissioning and start-up.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM), technical safety engineering and loss prevention principles.
• Hazard and risk assessment methods (HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, QRA, Bow-Tie).
